SUPER SUNDAY 2009 REPORT

The expectations of a close finish to the league on Super Sunday at Hopeman were unbelievably surpassed when with only three games left on the course, four clubs were still able to win the trophy. Additionally, one combination of results could even have resulted in the title being shared by Nairn and Forres!

Nairn set the mark when James Walton defeated George Anderson of Nairn Dunbar to secure a 5-3 victory for his team and take them to six points.

Moray and Forres were level at 3 ½ - 3 ½  before Michael Cowie beat Forres number one, Allan Martin to end Forres hopes but unfortunately  for the holders it still was not enough as on a count back of games won,  Nairn had a better total.

Therefore, all that stood between Nairn and a first success since 1997 was the last match on the course when anything other than an Elgin win would give them the title. Elgin had looked out of the running as they trailed 3½-1½  before wins by Hamish Simpson and Raymond Spence brought them level with the host club, Hopeman. With everyone gathered in front of the clubhouse for the arrival of the last pair, it was Elgin who were able to celebrate when news came through that Darren McKenzie had won 2/1 over Andy Stewart to claim victory for his side by the narrowest of margins.

Elgin had taken the title by virtue of more individual games won compared to both Nairn and Moray as all had finished on six points.

A great day’s and season’s golf was rounded off with a dinner and prize giving when it was clear the friendship on and off the course was the League’s greatest strength.

During the evening in a light hearted quiz, it emerged that Wayne Myron (Elgin) held the record for most appearances by any member since the inception of the Handicap League in 1996 with 42 appearances for his Club, whilst a member of the most recent addition to the League, Hopeman had the player with the most consecutive appearances (21) between 6th June 2004 and 1st June 2008 through Malcolm Brown. These and other statistics are now on the Statistics Page under Member Club and Individual Player.

Rounding off the day League Chairman, James Macpherson, presented Hopeman President, Sandy More with a framed certificate on behalf of the League in recognition of their achieving their Centenary this year.
